How do Range Hoods Work?

Apr 26,2022
A range hood is a kitchen appliance that filters smoke and other harmful pollutants from the air in your kitchen outside your home. Residential range hoods are available in a variety of CFM ratings. Most residential range hoods have a capacity of 400-1800 CFM.

However, range hoods under 400 CFM can be found. Or if you're an avid cook looking for a powerful hood, the 2000 CFM might be what you're looking for.

The two most common types are ducted and ductless. A ducted range hood draws air through a system of ducts that can pass through a wall or ceiling and out to your home. These are the most effective options for your home as they filter out all the grease, dirt, and chemicals in the air outside your home.

In contrast, a ductless range hood recirculates your kitchen air through some type of filter. It will trap some grease and dirt, but the same air will be recirculated in your home. Ductless range hoods are ideal for apartments or other living spaces where ductwork cannot be installed.

In general, if you cook a lot, buy a ducted range hood instead of a ductless one when possible.

Does the range hood have to be vented out?

If it is a ducted range hood, your range hood can be vented to the outside. Alternatively, you can purchase a device that recirculates kitchen air; these hoods are called ductless range hoods or fume hoods. A ducted range hood is more efficient and powerful than a ductless one if you want to get the job done right.

But some people may not be able to lead their hoods outside. The most common situation we encounter is with people living in apartments. These customers were unable to install ductwork, either because of their building codes or because they lived in a multi-story building complex that was unable to connect the ducts to the outdoors.

How do ducted range hoods work?

A ducted range hood ducts your kitchen air out of your home. This ensures you have excellent indoor air quality. Pipes can extend outside vertically or horizontally. It is then usually covered with a roof or wall cover to prevent external dirt, dust, water, and debris from building up inside the duct.

How do ductless range hoods work?

A recirculating or ductless range hood filters the air through a charcoal filter and recirculates it back to your kitchen. Charcoal filters trap some unwanted contaminants and can act to neutralize odors. But it won't catch all pollutants, so your best bet is to use a ducted range hood whenever possible.

How do range hood filters work?

A range hood filter traps grease and dirt in the kitchen air. The most common types of filters are baffle and mesh filters. Ductless range hoods use a charcoal filter that traps grease and neutralizes odors before the air flows back into the kitchen. Change the charcoal filter approximately every 120 hours of cooking. If you use a baffle filter, clean it every three to six weeks depending on how you cook.

The above describes the working principle of the range hood. If you are planning to buy a range hood, please contact us.
